In 1848 California was a place where few non native people lived. Mexico had been unable to populate the territory. This helped make it easy for the land to be taken by the United States. The United States wanted the land for the future. But no one thought of the regions as an economic power house. Then James Marshall's discover of gold, in the American River near Coloma, it set off a massive migration. People came from all around the world. Many Americans came by way of ships.

While many people came to California by sea others crossed the Plains, the Rockies, and the Sierra Nevada to arrive in the gold fields. In the image to the right you can see some of the path taken by those coming to California.
